Interpreting Program
At the Louisiana Commission for the Deaf (LCD), we value true accessibility as not just an afterthought, but something that must be built-in from the beginning. This starts with defining what it means to be accessible, educating others, modeling best practices, and empowering those that use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate.
LCD works to support the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, (ADA) and promote equitable communication access through:
- The establishment of minimum qualification standards for the ASL interpreter workforce
- Professional development opportunities for ASL interpreters
- A Statewide Mentoring Program for ASL interpreters
- A centralized, public-facing Interpreter Registry
- Communication tips, resources, and training
- Limited funding for interpreter costs
