Louisiana Interpreter Registry Now Accepting Applications

The Louisiana Interpreter Registry is accepting applications from Louisiana sign language interpreters! The application process allows registrants to submit all the information and documentation needed to comply with the state’s new minimum qualification standards and registration requirements. The application process is an easy online experience!

Interpreters working in general community and educational settings are required to register  upon publication of the new minimum standards effective May 20, 2026.  Registration is now open.

  • Minimum standards for court registration are being developed with the Louisiana Supreme Court Office of Language Access and are expected to be published in the fall of 2026. Interpreters currently registered by the Louisiana Supreme Court should maintain their registration with the Office of Language Access and apply for Generalist Registration with the Louisiana Commission for the Deaf. Interpreters will be notified when it is time to complete their court/legal registration on the Louisiana Interpreter Registry.
  • Minimum standards for Deaf interpreters are being developed and are expected to be published in the fall of 2026. Deaf interpreters are encouraged to create a profile in the Louisiana Interpreter Registry by July 1, 2026.

In order to provide interpreting services in Louisiana, all sign language interpreters must meet the new minimum qualification standards, or show active progress toward meeting the standards, and apply for inclusion on the Louisiana Interpreter Registry.

Individuals seeking to provide sign language interpreting services in the state of Louisiana, whether in-person or via remote services, must apply for registration with the Louisiana Commission for the Deaf. A person who is not registered with Louisiana Commission for the Deaf cannot do any of the following:

  • Use any title, abbreviation, words, letters, signs, or figures to indicate that the person holds Louisiana interpreter registration pursuant to the rule.

Note: The standards and registration requirements do not apply to individuals providing sign language interpreting services on a voluntary basis, receiving no compensation or in religious settings.

Interpreters who have already signed up on the Louisiana Interpreter Registry will receive an email asking to provide any additional information to show they meet the new standards and registration requirements.
